TO mark the 75th anniversary of the death of George Sturt on February 4, 1927, a tribute will be held in St Andrew's Church at 12 noon on Monday, February 4.
The ceremony will take place at the west end of the nave where the memorial tablet to George Sturt is situated.
The tablet was erected and unveiled in 1937. The inscription reads: "To the memory of George Sturt of this town. He wrote with understanding and distinction of the wheelwright's craft and English peasant life. Born 1863 - Died 1927."
This year's remembrance will include readings from Sturt's writings, given by George Baxter, Dr David Gervais, Tony Kenchington and Michael Leishman, and the placing of a floral tribute below the memorial tablet.
The Rev Jonathan Still, vicar of The Bourne – where Sturt lived from 1891 until his death – will, on behalf of the rector of St Andrew's. welcome those attending the ceremony.
The town mayor, Victor Duckett, will be present together with other people interested in the life and writings of George Sturt. All are welcome.
In 1987 the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the memorial tablet was marked with a remembrance ceremony in St Andrew's Church.
And on February 4 1997, the 70th anniversary of Sturt's death was commemorated there with a gathering at the memorial, where a simple ceremony included readings from Sturt's writings.
In February 1977 The Herald also reported the commemoration, on February 4 that year, when a ceremony took place at George Sturt's grave in Green Lane Cemetery to mark the 50th anniversary of his death.
A floral tribute in the shape of a wheel was placed on his grave.
Those attending then included people who had been associated with Farnham's recognition of Sturt since the town had celebrated the centenary of his birth in 1963.
Further events are planned to take place this year, both in Farnham and at the Rural Life Centre in Tilford, later on to commemorate Sturt.
