WHITEHILL Town Council has paid tribute to a “popular” and “cheery” member of its team following his sudden death.

“It is with sadness that we pay our respects to Chris Norkett who passed away on May 22,” a council spokesman said.

“Chris will be much missed by everyone. He had been with us for 20 months, starting as a part-time grounds officer who proved his worth and rapidly moved to a full-time role as senior grounds officer.

"He always had a cheery word and was a very popular member of the team. It was a shock to us all and we all send our condolences to his family."

The council office was closed on Thursday to give council officers and councillors the opportunity to attend Chris’ funeral at Alton’s All Saints Church.

Mr Norkett was 51 at the time of his unexpected death.
