FERNHURST Tennis Club finished the summer season with the fully booked Richard and Ruth Paine tournament for pairs, organised Tom Plant who also took part.

In a format that enabled the losers to continue to play for the plate, every couple played at least two matches with those progressing to the finals playing more.

Many of the matches were extremely close, with the finals of the trophy between Charlie Scott and his daughter Kirsty versus Tom and Antonia Plant being 7-5.

Michael Sheringham and Charlotte Evans played Jeremy Howard and Jill Holland for the plate, winning 6-4.Bottles of bubbly were opened as the prizes were presented by Nikki Webster, daughter of Richard and Ruth who had presented the shield.

Those who did not play for long were able to console themselves with a staggering range of homemade cakes contributed by all the players.

The club had five teams in the East Hants Summer League, but only two in the winter league when without lights matches have to be played at weekends.
