HINDHEAD Tunnel was closed in both directions on Tuesday morning when a silver Mercedes flipped over and ended up on its roof just inside the southbound portal.

Police responded to an emergency call at 10.38am to find the upturned car straddling both lanes and the driver was taken to the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford and treated for minor injuries.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "The overturned vehicle was travelling south but standard procedures kicked in and the A3 was closed in both directions with diversions in operation. We do have the facility to set up a contra-flow traffic system through the tunel with the speed limit reduced to 40mph but we needed to keep the northbound carriageway clear to enable emergency vehicles to get to the scene.

"We were able to reopen the northbound carriageway at 11.10am and the southbound carriageway at 11.36am."
