A BANK holiday crash on the A3 near Hindhead on Monday afternoon has claimed the lives of a mother and son.
Police have appealed for witnesses following the head-on crash which killed the driver, a 20-year-old man from Worthing, and his 46-year-old mother, also from Worthing.
They were pronounced dead at the scene after their car, a blue Citroën Saxo travelling south collided with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction.
Two other passengers in the Saxo - a 10-year-old girl, the daughter of the dead woman, and a 21-year-old woman, believed to be the girlfriend of the driver - were both seriously injured and taken to the Royal Surrey County Hospital.
The girl was treated for a leg injury and is still in hospital and the 21-year-old woman was said to be in a stable condition in intensive care.
The driver of the lorry, a 46-year-old man from Chessington, was taken to hospital suffering from cuts and shock.
The accident happened south of the Hindhead crossroads just past the junction of Hazel Grove at 2-30 pm.
Fire crews from Haslemere and a rapid intervention unit from Painshill worked with paramedics and fought for more than an hour to release the dead and injured from the twisted wreckage of the car. Five ambulances were called and the Sussex rescue helicopter was on stand-by.
The road was closed for six hours. Traffic built up in in both directions with diversion set up for southbound traffic.
An inquest was expected to be opened yesterday (Thursday)
Police are appealing to anyone with any information to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 01932 569922.
