A TWO-YEAR-OLD baby was rescued from a blaze on a travellers' site in Runfold last week. At approximately 9am on Thursday at The Willows, a mobile home caught fire, with neighbour Joleen Ray telling her heroic tale. "I live next door to where the fire started, and looked out of my window and saw a carvan on fire. "I ran out and saw a woman screaming: 'My two- year-old baby is in there. My baby is in the caravan.' "I went to front door and I could hear that the baby was in the hallway. I ran in there and thought 'I've got to get him out'. "I couldn't really see anything at first, but I heard him crying and pulled him out," she added. Both mother and baby were taken by ambulance to the Royal Surrey County Hospital to check for possible smoke inhalation. A spokesman from Surrey Fire and Rescue Services said: "It was well alight when we got there with our four appliances: two from Surrey and two from Rushmoor. "We got there within six minutes, after receiving the call at 9-08am on Thursday. I believe there were children rescued before we got there. "It involved a static mobile home. That was where the fire originated from and it spread to the caravan next door." "It is currently being investigated, and it may have been alight for some time as there was quite a lot of smoke going up. "We did fit 28 smoke detectors in the afternoon across the site. They were quite pleased to have them," he added. However, another resident of the site, who did not wish to be named, expressed his grave concerns for fellow incumbents of The Willows. "When the site was built in 1989, there used to be two fire hoses at each end. But they did away with one, as it had a water main leak and then they took the other one away," he said. "We've been going to the fire station for the past two months to say how dangerous this is, but Surrey County Council have been no help at all. They've just dumped us. "The council just seems to wash their hands of us. You don't get any trouble here, we're as good as gold. "But we are not getting treated fairly from the council. We pay council tax to Waverley Borough Council and pay rent to Surrey County Council. "When we need to speak to somebody, we can't get hold of anybody. And now this happens. It's now a very unsafe place." he lamented.
