HASLEMERE Under Nines rugby team enjoyed a very successful season.

Head coach Jamie Austin said: “Every single player has given more than any of the coaches or parents could have expected. They have gelled, played for each other and generally got on with playing very attractive rugby. As a result Haslemere U9s have developed a well-earned reputation, as the ‘team to beat’ at tournaments.

“Opposition teams feared them, spectators enjoyed watching them – they always seemed to attract the biggest crowds and the loudest cheers.”

Season highlights included one team achieving a clean sheet during a match, beating a much more high-profile team, and gaining the highest winning margin in one match.

All their hard work cumulated in the team only losing three of their 32 games in 2016/17.

Freddie Burton won the Best Newcomer award, Noah Laybourne was named Most Improved Player and Teddy Henry was Clubman of the Year, while Jimmy Wilson lifted the Players’ Player award.

The U10 season starts in September with an introduction to scrums, rucks and mauls.
