THE former home of Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has recently been put back on the market. Guildford estate agents Lambert Smith Hampton, this week confirmed the 'Undershaw Hotel' in Portsmouth Road, Hindhead, was available to buy or let, although no asking price has been set. The historic home was built as a private house for Conan Doyle in 1897, and in particular for his wife, who was suffering from tuberculosis. The Grade II-listed building was converted into a 16-bedroom hotel in 1924 and closed in 2004. The building has around 10,000 square feet of floor space spread across three floors with three acres of grounds. Waverley Borough Council commissioned work to secure Undershaw in April this year. The work aimed to prevent further deterioration of the building owned by Fossway Limited, a company registered in the British Virgin Islands. Scaffolding was put up to support a metal roof, accessible windows were boarded up to allow the building to dry out over the summer. The owner failed to properly carry out the necessary work in a reasonable time to keep Undershaw safe, despite being asked to do so several times by Waverley. The Victorian Society is still awaiting a decision on its appeal against the Department of Culture, Media and Sport's refusal to upgrade Undershaw to Grade I-listed building status, which would put it in the top three per cent of Britain's buildings.
