Riding high! Not only did Hindhead fundraiser Eloise Carter make treble her justgiving target for charity, but the high-achieving St Edmund’s student also scored seven GCSE grade nines, two grade eights and four grade sixes.
Eloise got her GCSE results the day after doing a joint 10k Unicycle Ride for Prostate Cancer UK at The Devil’s Punch Bowl, together with Bohunt School student James Skan.
The duo had already managed to raise around £500 for the charity, before setting themselves the target of £100 with their ride at the Hindhead beauty spot.
They have already received donations of more than £300 – and still counting. Their charity challenge was undertaken in memory of Eloise’s grandfather Ivan Humphrey, who died of prostate cancer a few years ago.
“I picked up unicycle riding when I was younger, with James,” she said.
“We both thought doing that would help raise awareness , because it’s so unusual.
“It was really tough to do. We did laps riding the old A3 route until we reached 10k.
“Now restored to heathland, the track is very up and down and unicycles have no gears, so we had to pedal continuously to move.
“It was exhausting. We trained every day, leading up to the challenge.
“Quite a few people who saw us on the day sponsored us there and then.
“We had some really generous donations from people just walking past us.
“It was very nice to be able to raise money in memory of my grandfather.
“The unicycle ride was a good distraction for both of us from the build up to the GCSE results the next day.
“I’m really pleased with my results and will be doing A-Levels at Godalming College, James is doing his A-Levels at Bohunt.”
The Prostate Cancer Charity, founded in 1996, merged with Prostate Action in 2012 to form Prostate Cancer UK. It has invested more than £37million into ground-breaking research, and continues to provide award-winning support for men.
Research undertaken has contributed to the development of a new treatment for early prostate cancer.
