FEARS that "unsound" housing targets could derail Waverley's blueprint to govern planning for the period up to 2028 and potentially lead to rejection by a Government inspector have forced a major rethink.

In a surprise decision, the borough council's executive last week halted this month's planned submission of its draft Core Strategy to the Government for examination, amid concerns that not enough new housing had been proposed.

Waverley's portfolio holder for planning councillor Bryn Morgan told members it would be "premature" to submit the document.

At issue is its target of 5,060 new homes for the borough between 2006 and 2028.
