A CONCERT of piano works by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Bartok, performed by renowned pianist Bela Hartmann will take place at Hindhead Music Centre later this month.

The programme offers a chance to hear “the greatest piano work ever written”, the 33 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli, by Beethoven.

Originally commissioned by the publisher Diabelli to write a single variation, Beethoven enjoyed himself so much making fun of the waltz that he eventually supplied 33 variations, including all manner of pastiches of other composers, with quotations from Bach and Handel to Mozart, even quoting from his own works in the process.

“Ranging from the serene to the comical, this monumental work is guaranteed to contain something for every taste,” said Béla.

The programme on Sunday, January 29, begins with a pre-concert talk by Bela at 3pm, followed by the recital at 4pm. The latter starts with Mozart’s 12 variations on Ah, Vous Dirai-je Maman – better known as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

Also included are Bartok’s short but hugely popular Rumanian Dances and Chopin’s Fourth Ballade.

Previously a semi-finalist at the Leeds International Piano Competition, B la Hartmann has been internationally celebrated for his recordings of Beethoven and Schubert and has performed globally from the USA to Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

He has given recitals as part of the Haslemere Festival and teaches at the Hindhead Music Centre. Tickets are £15, with kids half price.
