A 21-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested following an incident in which four vehicles travelling on the A3 at Hindhead were hit by air rifle pellets in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man, from Mitcham, was arrested around 3-30 am when a police search of the area found a man carrying a laser-sighted air-rifle.

No one was injured in the incident which happened around 1-30 am close to the Devil's Punchbowl. The vehicles targeted were travelling southbound towards Hindhead.

Damage estimated at more than £1,000 was sustained by the vehicles which included an articulated lorry and three cars.

An estimated £300 worth of damage was caused when one of the pellets pierced the windscreen of the lorry's cab.

A Rover was hit, leaving three pellet marks on the offside door and causing £500 worth of damage. The rear windscreen of a Fiat Punto was smashed by a pellet, causing damage estimated at £200.

A third car sustained minor damage to the driver's door.

The Mitcham man has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
