AN Alton soldier who was awarded the Victoria Cross in the First World War is to be remembered with a special paving stone laid in his home town. Ernest Horlock was awarded the VC, Britain's highest military medal, for "conspicuous gallantry" on September 15, 1914. All the Great War's Victoria Cross reipients will be honoured with a commemorative stone as part of the centenary celebrations of that conflict. East Hampshire District Council will be responsible for laying the stone. For full story, see this week's Alton Herald.
