ALTON MP Michael Mates is delighted this week to announce victory in the campaign to include holders of the Victoria and George Cross in the line-up for Jubilee medals.
According to Mr Mates, the government has Òbowed to pressureÓ and backed down on its decision not to award the Jubilee medal to holders of the Victoria Cross and George Cross who, he says, have been recipients of previous Coronation and Jubilee medals Òin recognition of their special status as the most gallant of men and women.Ó
In response to a recent question in the House from Michael Mates, the Prime Minister replied that he would look into the matter and that Mr Mates would be informed of the position.
ÒClearly Mr Blair has knocked heads together and backed the Ministry of Defence, who have also pressed for this special status to be acknowledged,Ó said the local MP.
ÒThis overdue decision has had to be dragged out of the government, but I congratulate them for eventually doing the right thing.Ó
Mr Mates is adamant: ÒNot to have recognised these special people would have been an insult to their bravery and the sacrifice they have made for their country.
ÒI am delighted to have been able to play a part in bringing about this change in policy,Ó he said.
