RESIDENTS will be consulted over whether they want the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 to carry on in the county from 2021 onwards.

As part of the legacy of the 2012 Olympics in London, Surrey County Council (SCC) approved the biking event originally called the Marathon on Wheels.

Around £2.5 million has been given to sports and recreational charities in Surrey since the county first hosted the event in 2013.

This includes £44,000 towards a new accessible outdoor play facility at Challengers in St James Avenue, Farnham, providing a range of inclusive play opportunities for disabled children and young people, their friends and families.

Other local projects to benefit directly from RideLondon-Surrey 100 include £8,000 to build an outdoor gym at Hollowdene recreation ground in Frensham, and £9,339 for coaching equipment at Hindhead playing fields.

On Tuesday, May 29, SCC cabinet agreed for the ride to continue until 2020 and for consultation to be carried out on whether it should take place from 2021 to 2026.

The contract for London-Surrey Cycle Partnership (LSCP) which delivers the event runs out next year.

Speaking at the cabinet meeting council leader David Hodge said the RideLondon-Surrey 100 had been a “hugely successful legacy” of the 2012 Olympic games.

He said: “We will see the Olympic legacy for another year until 2020 and we will recognise and clearly understand some residents have concerns about RideLondon which is why we will hold consultations about any future decision for 2021 onwards.”

Details of the consultation for carrying on with the event from 2021 will be published later this year.
