WONDERFUL weather and the Royal Wedding meant this year was a busy one for the annual Elstead Duck Race, as hundreds of yellow ducks raced to see who’d be crowned top duck.
The race was held at the Mill in Elstead and was in support of St James Primary School.
The traditional duck race has been running in the village since 2013 and is run by governors of the primary school. Money raised will go towards residential trips and capital building projects at the school.
Headteacher Valerie Elliott said: “Funding is always tight, so the governors and staff at the school work hard to fundraise for our nurturing school helping to update the facilities and ensure all children can take part in residential trips whatever their circumstances.”
Racing commenced at the earlier time of 10am due to the Royal Wedding, which was screened in the Cyget Room on the first floor of the pub.
Three hundred ducks raced in three heats, with the first 20 past the post going through to the grand final.
The overall winner won a £50 prize and duck plate trophy. Prizes were beautifully personalised and donated by Ceramimagic.
The Giant Duck Race was made up of 11 sponsored ducks, a number of which were suitably dressed in royal outfits to celebrate the Royal Wedding - they even had their very own Prince Harry and Meghan Markle racing.
Races were started from the middle of the river by brave school teachers and escorted down the river by former pupils.
Managers at The Mill at Elstead were up early preparing the delicious hog roast and getting the level and flow of the river right for the races.
Race organiser Rachel Dunnage said: “This event involves past governors and pupils and is one of the few school fundraisers where parents can just enjoy being with their children.
“Our thanks go to Fullers for sponsoring us and allowing us to use this wonderful setting.”
