SHEET villagers are being consulted on the controversial proposal to build houses on land behind St Mary's Church.

The row over the potential development has caused a split in the village and has led to a disagreement between the parochial church council and the Sheet Village Association.

Many residents feel angry at the PCC, which said it would support the development, which would include plans for a new church hall, if the land was "rezoned" for housing.

At the annual general meeting of the village association residents listened to both sides, the developer and the Residents Against Development In Sheet (RADISH) committee.

RADISH spokesperson Wayne Robertson said the proposal could add to huge parking problems, endanger rare wildlife species, create more flooding problems and cause the largest divide in the village ever.

A few weeks later, 95 per cent of residents at a meeting of the village association voted against the development.

But the group has decided to consult the rest of the village and has now distributed hundreds of flyers to households in the area.

The leaflet, headed "We need your views", explains the proposal and includes statements from the PCC and the Sheet Village Association.

The leaflet states: "Sheet Village Association would now like everybody in Sheet to give their opinions on this matter so we are sending this questionnaire to every house in the parish of Sheet.

"The result, whatever it is, will form the Sheet Village Association response to any planning application which may eventually be lodged with EHDC for any development on Churchfield."

People are being asked to formulate their response by the end of this month and the results will be made public later this year.
