VILLAGERS joined Grayshott Society members for a litter picking session last Saturday.

The litter pick crew started from the Millennium Green and volunteers were part of a new national campaign, with spring clean-ups held up and down the country over the weekend.

Grayshott Society vice-chairman Phil Bates, who took part, said “Overall the village was pretty clear of litter, but the usual culprit was in abundance in places: cigarette butts. Sadly I guess these are not considered as litter by those dropping them but when they accumulate in piles they make areas very messy and unattractive.

He added: “I am not sure what message can be given to curtail this lazy thoughtless action.”

The Great British Spring Clean succeeds last year’s Clean for the Queen campaign and aims to become an annual event. People taking part were able to use litter picking equipment supplied by district councils.

Litter costs councils in England more than £700 million on street cleaning services every year.
