WALKING toilets returned to Lion and Lamb Yard as WaterAid volunteers celebrated World Toilet Day last month.

The volunteers, dressed as toilets for the occasion, came together to raise money to help provide access to a safe and sanitary place to go to the toilet for some of the 2.3 billion people in the developing world who are still without this basic provision.

Farnham Rock Choir, led by Tom George, supported the event by entertaining shoppers with some well-known seasonal songs.

As an extra bonus West Surrey WaterAid co-ordinators Linda and Dave Shurlock sang a duet of the World Toilet Day theme tune ‘I Am Your Toilet’.

Dave was thrilled with the result. “The collection raised £531.18 which will help support sanitation projects in Madagascar – one of the world’s poorest countries.

“This will be enough to train and empower two village volunteer committees to manage and maintain their newly constructed latrines and safe water supply.”

Linda added: “We have had the privilege of visiting some WaterAid projects in action and have seen how safe water and toilets transform poor communities out of poverty.”
