AGE Concern Liphook is buying a specially adapted nine-seater minibus as a form of transport for the elderly in the parish which will be run by volunteers.
This free service has come about due to the cut back in public transport by Hampshire County Council and the decline in volunteer drivers for many of the local organisations.
Age Concern Liphook chairman Robin Young said: “We aim to transport anyone over 60 and take them to meetings at the day cntre, to church services, to the church centre for tea and company, to parish meetings, the Millennium Centre Cinema and the Artisan Market as well as other events around the village. This will hopefully get elderly residents out of their homes to meet other people and enjoy a social life.
“There will be no charge to passengers or groups but we are happy to accept donations. Co-ordinating the minibus is Penny Leigh, who runs the Liphook Day Centre, but we do need more volunteer drivers.
“If you can spare some time to help us please get in touch. We anticipate the minibus to be in use about once every two weeks. It can be driven on a normal licence as it is only a nine-seater vehicle.”
