Pensioners in Waverley borough in receipt of council tax benefit are to receive a one-off £80 payment to help with their household bills.

Around 2,500 people are set to receive the payment from Waverley Borough Council, as part of the government’s package of support responding to the cost of living crisis.

It comes as gas and electric bills are set to rise 80 per cent from next month, with spiralling inflation also pushing up the price of food.

A Waverley spokesperson said: “As part of the government’s Household Support Fund, Waverley Borough Council is developing its own local scheme to support pensioners in the borough through this difficult time.

“Funds are limited but the council is supporting around 2,500 pensioners in receipt of Council Tax benefit who will receive an £80 direct payment to help towards their household bills.

“Those who are eligible will receive a letter and an automatic payment (where we have their bank details) or will be asked to complete a form.”
