VICTIMS of the Paris terrorist attacks were remembered on a Silence Walk through Haslemere,.
French resident Marion Chassua, who lives in Lodsworth, asked for those taking part in the show of solidarity to bring candles and flowers to the walk that started at 8.30pm on Lion Green and finished at the War Memorial, in the High Street.
Despite a strong show of support beforehand on social media, less than 20 people joined the walk, which had four members of St John Ambulance in attendance. Walkers were greeted at the war memorial by mayor Melanie Odell and town councillors, who came out of a meeting in the town hall to show support.
Marion said: “The reason why I wanted to organise this walk was because I felt that I needed to do something in memory of the people who died last Friday. And I thought it could be beautiful to have English people with me in solidarity. I had a lot of answers on Facebook, but actually at the walk we were something like 15, including four persons of ambulance.
“But at the end of the walk all the persons of the council went out to put candles on the memorial and the mayor had a word. It was really emotional. I’m glad we did it. I’m still sad but I think it was important.”
