THE Pub Appreciation Walk Society (PAWS) completed 100 pub walks last Sunday when members visited The Hawkley Inn.

Founded in 2007, PAWS has never repeated a pub, with the exception of The Hawkley Inn, which was the venue for the first walk nine years ago.

The aim is to walk to 200 pubs by 2023.

The Pub Appreciation Walk Society was set up by Tim and Nina Tinsley-Wickes as a way of getting regular exercise, enjoying the countryside of Surrey, West Sussex and Hampshire, meeting friends and, most importantly, having a good lunch at an English pub.

And the acronymn PAWS is appropriate too as dogs are welcome.

“PAWS has been a success because everyone has mucked in with finding suitable pubs, route planning and sampling menus,” said Tim.

“We have been amazed by the variety and quality of the pubs we’ve paused at, most producing excellent food and all providing considerate and helpful service.

“Over the years, the number of walkers has varied from a minimum of six to an exceptional 32 when we reached the 50-walk mark. When we’ve reach our 200th PAWS walk, we’ll have covered more than 1,000 miles and it’ll be time to write the book.”

Sunday’s walk saw a turnout of 21 walkers.
