BORDON is another step closer to having a war memorial, now that the project has been granted planning permission.
The memorial, which will be sited on the corner of Camp Road and Ennerdale Road, was granted planning permission by senior district planner Keith Oliver under delegated powers.
The permission was granted with the condition that the war memorial committee begins construction within five years and that it submits details of building materials.
This means that the war memorial committee can turn its attention towards fundraising.
Committee secretary Steve Johnson explained: "We have got to register as a charity, but we have to provide details about the lease of the land.
"Now East Hampshire District Council has told us that that we can have the land at £1 a year with conditions.
"We have written to them to find out what these conditions are and once we know, we can register as a charity."
Mr Johnson said that the committee has already raised £1,300 and is hopeful of getting more in the near future.
However, he told The Herald that the committee still has to make a final decision about the overall design of the memorial, which will honour Bordon's war dead in both world wars, the Korean War and the Falklands War.
As previously reported, the town council was concerned that the brick design would not be suitable to withstand the elements or vandalism.
Mr Johnson said that the committee, at its next meeting on May 2, would be looking at two new designs.
