BORDON'S bid to build a war memorial in the town is progressing, with fundraising efforts beginning to bear fruit.
So far the Bordon War Memorial Association has raised £5,558 for the scheme, including a £4,000 grant from Hampshire County Council.
Association secretary Steve Johnson said that the group has now achieved charity status and soon hopes to hit the fundraising trail hard.
"We will be asking for local donations and asking businesses for donations as well."
Last Thursday the association examined two possible designs for the memorial, which will be situated on Camp Road, although it was unable to choose which it would like to formally adopt.
Mr Johnson put forward his proposed design for a polished granite memorial costing around £11,600 - a similar design to the Korean veterans' memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum.
The group was unable to examine a second design put forward by chairman Jim Grieve, because it had not yet been costed.
Mr Johnson said: "This has got planning permission, we are now a registered charity and now we need to decide what design we are going to follow.
"Once we have got the costing for the chairman's design we will call another meeting to decide what design we are going to have."
