Farnham’s first World Craft Town artist in residence received a warm welcome at a reception hosted by the Mayor of Farnham.
Glass artist, Fiona Byrne met local makers from Farnham’s craft community along with councillors and members of the South Street Trust which is sponsoring the initiative
Councillor Alan Earwaker, Mayor of Farnham said: “We are honoured that Fiona Byrne agreed to accept the invitation to be Farnham’s first artist in residence.
“Whilst here, she is going to create an original piece of work for the town which will reflect Farnham’s craft ethos.
“She is also going to be giving a talk about her work at Oxfam Bookshop on Thursday, March 14 at 6pm.
“Tickets are available on the door and they cost £4 with proceeds going to Oxfam.”
Speaking at the reception, Fiona Byrne said: “I can see why Farnham has received the designation of a World Craft Town, the energy and creativity here is really special and should be celebrated.
“I have been truly blown away by how much is happening here and the warm welcome I have received.
“It is a fantastic honour to be the first artist in residence for Farnham Craft Town and I look forward to exploring and making in this beautiful place.”
As England’s first World Craft Town, Farnham is part of a network that promotes crafting through education, fellowship between crafters, and economic development through craft-related activities.
Key partners that steer the Farnham World Craft Town programme include Farnham Town Council, Farnham Maltings, University for the Creative Arts, New Ashgate Gallery, the Crafts Study Centre, Farnham Pottery and a makers group.
