Members of a martial arts and self-defence group have completed an oar-some challenge as they recently swapped their Farnham dojo for a dragon boat.

The Women’s Martial Arts Tribe may love fitness, self-defence and focus, but they got a real kick out of competing in a dragon boat racing competition for Sam Beare & Woking Hospice.

And they got a real sensei of achievement, as the only female crew to enter the competition at Goldsworth Park in Woking raised an impressive £1,925.

Some 20 crews took part while the atmosphere was terrific even before the races began, with entrants being treated to a Chinese Dragon dance, warm-up and safety briefing before taking to the water.

The ladies took to the challenge like a duck to water, continually improving their race times and competitiveness.

They sadly didn’t reach the final as two of the three races were against the fastest teams and eventual finalists, but the achievement and fundraising total was a great result for everyone.

“The ladies may not have won a medal but we a fantastic day was had by all and they went home happy and feeling like winners,” said a spokesperson for the group, which meets every Wednesday and Friday evening at Heath End School.

“The day was one of friendship, fun and community for the tribe, and we’re looking forward to taking part again next year.”

The WMAT is more than just fitness, self-defence and focus as its billed as a community where friendships are formed. Ladies looking for a new activity, challenge, fun, fitness and friendship are welcome to come along for a free taster class with a beginners course also starting soon.
