A "FIGHTING fund" has been set up, to enable the Farnham Society to comprehensively oppose the current plans for East Street at every stage, it was revealed this week. Donations and pledges are starting to build up, including one of a "four-figure sum" from one member, it was announced, as the society vowed to challenge Waverley Borough Council by every legal means. All donations will be ring fenced and used solely in the campaign the Farnham Society is planning The Farnham Society has claimed a wave of support for its views since its chairman, Max Lyons, issued a letter to every Waverley councillor with a copy to The Farnham Herald, detailing his reasons as to why the proposed Sainsbury/Crest Nicholson development plans are totally wrong for Farnham. "Like most people in Farnham, the society is totally supportive of a regeneration scheme that will improve this area of Farnham that the council have neglected for so long," the organisation commented. "What no one ever contemplated was the tall, ultra-modern, high-density development that is planned with the sole objective of generating money and which would be so out of place in this historic town. "If the residents of Waverley, and Farnham in particular, wish to join with the society and object to the proposed scheme or donate to the fighting fund then they should contact the Farnham Society.
