WAVERLEY Conservatives have this week called for the public to be given the chance to have their say on whether they want a European Union (EU) treaty agreed by the government. The Conservative group on Waverley Borough Council is backing David Cameron's call for a referendum on the revived EU Constitution, which they claim will result in major shifts of power from Britain to the EU and significant changes in the way the EU works. If the treaty is implemented the EU would be able to sign treaties in its own right and the European Commission and Court of Justice would have new powers over criminal law. The EU Treaty would also set up a new EU president, a Foreign Minister in everything but name and diplomatic service. Conservatives believe the Government has absolutely no democratic mandate to introduce such major changes without further reference to the British people, particularly after a manifesto commitment to a referendum on the EU Constitution. Waverley Conservatives group leader Richard Gates said: "The new 'Treaty' is the same as the discredited Constitution, rejected by France and Denmark . "Labour was elected promising to hold a referendum. Let them, for once, honour a promise."
