WITH even the Royal Family becoming champions of wellbeing, an event taking place in Bordon on Sunday fits well into this topical national agenda.

Two charities - Community First and the Whitehill and Bordon Community Association - have teamed up to stage The Buzz, which will promote health and wellbeing at Bordon’s Forest Community Centre.

At the free event, from 1pm-4pm, residents will be invited to take part in taster activities and discover a range of services offered in the town which promote health and wellbeing.

There will be opportunities for people to find out about services such as meditation sessions, counselling, disability support, walking groups, gentle exercise, fitness classes and music.

Non-profit-making services - such as the mental-health charity Mind and the Whitehill and Bordon Walking for Health group - will have a presence on the day.

The Rushmoor Healthy Living group will offer free NHS health checks for people, age 40 to 74, who meet the criteria.

Staff from Tesco in Bordon will hold activities for children and a healthy soup lunch will be provided by RKdia Catering - the social enterprise which will be managing a cafe opening soon at Radian Housing’s new Quebec Park development in Camp Road, Bordon.

Funding for The Buzz has been donated by East Hampshire district councillor Sally Pond (Cons, Whitehill Chase).

“I am delighted to help such a worthwhile project and hope that residents will enjoy the event,” she said.

The Buzz will also be the first opportunity for the public to get involved with the Whitehill and Bordon Community Association’s Cathedral of Colour Remembrance-weekend project. Visitors attending the event will be invited to give a donation in return for a piece of coloured acetate and, using a waterproof pen, write the name of an individual they wish to be remembered or a place where there is conflict or need in the world.

The Community Association is aiming to collect 1,000 pieces of coloured acetate, which will be hung from a framework in the Event Space outside the Forest Community Centre, which the association manages, to form a Cathedral of Colour. Any profits will go to support the work of the Royal British Legion.

“We hope that this event will give people a real buzz,” said organiser and Forest Centre administrator Michael Rutland. “There will be something for everyone - music, fitness, food and wellbeing.”

Claire Coxwell, community development worker from the charity Community First said: “This is a real opportunity for residents to find out about local non-profit-making groups that offer useful services in the town.

“It will also be a chance for the groups themselves to network and make new links, which can then be passed on to the people that these organisations serve.”

Curtis Bone, of the Whitehill & Bordon Town Partnership, said: “The Partnership will be attending The Buzz event, which helps to promote a healthy and happy lifestyle. Community groups are key to a happy town and events like this show how important they are. Why not pop down and see for yourself what’s available in the town?”
