EAST Hampshire District Council has a duty to 'topple test' all headstones in its cemeteries – and people in Liss have been warned that theirs are failing. Speaking at Liss Parish Council's annual meeting, district councillor Elizabeth Cartwright reported that 80 headstones at the West Liss cemetery had failed the test and had temporarily been made safe by being propped up with a stake. Mrs Cartwright said: "They will need to be permanently reinstated by a qualified stonemason, but it is the responsibility of the family to undertake this work." "I am aware that many relatives visit the cemeteries at Easter and may be surprised by what they find," added Mrs Carwright. "If you know anyone with relatives buried in West Liss, please could you alert them to the problem. I do not understand why so many have failed in Liss and not elsewhere."
