A LONG-AWAITED £100,000 improvement scheme for Wey Hill could go ahead this summer, if the plan is approved this spring.

Tracey Webb, Surrey County Council's principal engineer for Waverley, said that the proposals, which include providing better safety measures for pedestrians and motorists "stood a good chance" of going ahead.

"It is pretty high on a list of priority Waverley local transport schemes," said Miss Webb. She added that it was in competition with other schemes and would be dependent on budget demands to be agreed in April.

Among the proposals are safety improvements close to the pelican crossing at the bottom of Wey Hill, including making St Christopher's Road junction more visible, and enhancing the public footway, possibly using more decorative paving materials.

Pinch points would stop parking on double yellow lines and there is also talk of moving the bus stop further up the road and away from the Tesco traffic lights, to a less congested area outside Haslemere Methodist Church.

""We don't anticipate losing any on-street parking bays and may gain a few more," said Miss Webb.

She hoped the work would tie in with resurfacing the main carriageway in Wey Hill.

She said consultations on the major maintenance work would take place with shopkeepers, Surrey County Council, Haslemere Town Council and the chamber of trade. Work would hopefully begin this summer.

Haslemere town councillor and chairman of the planning and highways committee Michael Foster welcomed the scheme and told The Herald that the plans had been in the melting pot for some time.

He said that a working party had been formed some years ago which began as Lion Green working party but had expanded to take in Wey Hill. The town council expects to see the plans for Wey Hill in April.

Mr Foster said that Surrey County Council had wanted to improve the road and pavements for some time but was delayed by legal searches because part of the pavement belonged to SCC, some to shops and other parts were privately owned.

He said that other plans for the area included the repainting of Lion Green play equipment this year and the possibility of adding more equipment.
