IT was all go on Good Friday at the Fernhurst Centre for the annual Easter Egg Hunt, when more than 35 children helped Mother Hen find where her baby chicks were hidden.

This year there were boxed egg prizes for every entrant in addition to the winners in each of three age categories in the popular event planned and managed by volunteer Caroline Lewis and her son Mark.

Loyal centre supporter Paul Farnham, who spent the afternoon manning the road crossing, said: “There was a constant stream of happy hunters rushing all round the village and then lining up to cross the road.

“The children were using up plenty of energy and I could see what a good time they were having.

“Many people think of the Fernhurst Centre mainly as a computer hub and internet cafe, but this was a wonderful example of the way the centre also brings the community together to have fun.”

Back at the centre following the hunt, a team of helpers including Tina Ridgway, Christine Smalley, Maureen Timms and Christine Maynard were on hand to offer refreshments and process the trail sheets. The winners were Saul Coombes, 10, Esme Brimacombe, 7, and two year-old Ruby Brench.

The centre’s volunteer manager Pauline Colcutt, who made the chicks and map with her artist husband Les, said: “This event seems to get more popular every year. We have met lots of new families this Easter – word that there was fun for all ages at the centre definitely got around.

“Following the egg hunt, there was a free Easter biscuit decorating morning for children at the centre on Wednesday, run by Louise and Gill from the Great Little Cookery School in Fernhurst.”
