PILLARS of the town community were asked what key issues they want to flag up to their newly re-elected Tory MP Jeremy Hunt to take forward in the next term of parliament.
This is what they said:
* Craig McGowan, Haslemere and District Chamber of Trade president, said: “It would be nice if our new MP could meet us and get a better understanding of the tribulations facing businesses here.
“The main issues are: Business rates – the current system needs changing to make it a more level playing field between the high street and online retailers; ending the economic uncertainty at national level; improving town car parking and passenger transport services; providing more resources for the police to help them counteract the increase in town and district crime.
* Kerry Morren-Jeffs, Haslewey community centre manager: “We would like a twice-yearly meeting with our MP to recognise the value of an all-age community centre offering social interaction to people who would otherwise be alone. There used to be a regular surgery in Tesco. Haslewey will be happy to offer a space free of charge to reinstate it.
* Haslemere Youth Hub team: “We are an independent charity which rents the building from Waverley Borough Council at an annual rent of £21,000. The running costs come to the same amount, all of which has to be raised from hire of the rooms, charitable donations and the generosity of the community.
“The hub receives no funding from any local government sources. What we would wish from our future MP is the promise of a commitment to youth services in our area.
“A big wish is for better mental health services for children and young people in our catchment area. We offer a free counselling service but this is just not enough to meet the need.”
* Elaine Clements, Hunter Centre operations manager: “We feel there needs to be an easier pathway for those who think they or a loved one is showing early signs of dementia.
“There needs to be improved links between GPs, statutory services and local support, with better post-diagnostic support and information for families. Unfortunately, many slip through the cracks and are not getting the support they desperately need.”
* Rev Chris Bessant, Haslemere rector: “I recently heard the NHS described as the nearest thing to a national religion. Understandably, I’m not sure I agree, but one vital thing we need is a better staffing. Haslemere is a beautiful environment. It must be protected and made accessible to all. I’m a big fan of Haslemere shops and would like a better parking fee scheme for quick visits and incentives for new shops.”
