Sir, – I refer to the recent front page article referring to the
re-development of East Street – a rather misleading description of the area involved.
I was informed by W M Stevenson, Property and Development Manager Waverley Borough Council in August 1999, that the area could be said to be within that bounded on the north by the Woolmead, to the west by South Street to the south by the River Wey and to the east by the Dogflud.
A great deal of course
owned by Waverley Borough. A very valuable asset – both in
financial terms and perhaps more importantly – aesthetically.
In my previous correspondence I have many times asked how the councils involved can keep on saying that there is a great deal of public support for the scheme. This is again reported in front page article in your newspaper dated May 31. There has been no evidence to support this.
Perhaps the real problem is that our elected representatives do not care about the thoughts of the electorate. They are obviously determined to carry on regardless. Finally amidst all the talk of redevelopment very little has been mentioned about the road patterns "all under the control of Surrey County Council" I have
previously been told.
Yet of course we are assured by Capt Burden that the roads are an essential part of the scheme. One complete mess has been made already to South Street. I feel sure that the
powers that be will proceed with their mad ideas in Downing Street – despite the strong objections made by traders and public alike.
Finally the East Street
debacle also includes the pedestrianisation of East Street and the conversion of the Woolmead (the narrow street behind the Woolmead
development) into a two-way street. Being a local resident (I live in Bear Lane) I shudder to envisage the complete
blockage of the town.
Has anybody stopped to watch a fair sized lorry turn left from the Borough at the traffic lights and notice how much road is left – yet traffic will be standing waiting to go straight ahead or will the traffic lights be scrapped and let devil take the hindmost at the junction?!!! And of course taxis and buses can still go straight across
from the Borough into
"pedestrianised" East Street.
