Haslemere Swimming Club came away from Crystal Palace with a clutch of medals after the opening stage of the Surrey County Age Group Championships, the long-distance and sprint gala 2002.

The club's best result on Sunday was achieved by Thomas White who won gold in the 13 years 800m freestyle. He completed this gruelling event in a time of 9mins 52.43secs.

Clare Baranowski took bronze in the girls' 13yrs event with a time of 10mins 08secs.

Thomas White (4mins 44.33) also claimed silver in the 400m freestyle. The event was won by Nick Middleton of Guildford City (4mins 38.65).

The Haslemere girls excelled in the 13yrs age group. Sarah Jackson took silver in the 50m freestyle with a time of 29.74secs, Guildford City's Emma Goddard winning the gold in 29.41.

In the 16yrs age group, Jennie Clarke (29.83) came fourth, followed by Helen Jackson (30.31). Katherine Wyld (28.51), from Leatherhead, took gold.

Kate Frost finished fourth in the girls' 13yrs 400m individual medley, as did Emily Francis in the 13yrs 50m backstroke and Bryony Dunne in the in the 10yrs age group. Katie Philo took fifth in the 11yrs event and Emily Frost was sixth.

David Short came fifth in the boys' 11yrs 50m butterfly.

"This was a great result for Haslemere," said chief coach Adam Baker. "Out of 26 swims, the swimmers achieved 20 personal best times. I'm delighted and look forward to many more medals during the championships."
