BIG crowds are expected at Dunsfold Park’s Wings and Wheels 2016 on Saturday and Sunday – and new traffic measures have been implemented to improve entry and exit to the show.
Some spectacular aerial action is promised with headline displays on both days by the Red Arrows and the Eurofighter Typhoon.
In the week of the first anniversary of the Shoreham Air Show disaster in which 11 people were killed and 16 more seriously injured when a vintage jet crashed hitting traffic on the A27, the air show at Dunsfold Park remains unchanged following the CAA’s new rules and regulations introduced in the disaster’s wake.
Wings and Wheels visitors will enjoy full displays from the Spitfire and Hurricane fighters from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
There will also be displays featuring Black Cats, Sally B, Blades, DC3, B25 Mitchell, P51 Mustang, Hurricane, plus the Tigers parachute display team, Jet Provost and the Turbulent Team.
For the first time at the Surrey show, the Norwegian Air Force Historical Squadron will be bringing two de Havilland Vampires as part of the five-hour air display on each day.
Speeding around the BBC Top Gear track will be supercars, classics and race cars in two-hour auto-spectaculars mounted by Brooklands Museum. The museum is also filling a motoring paddock with more than 200 landmark vehicles, ranging from the only remaining survivor of the French Dieppe 1912 Grand Prix team, to Russ Carpenter’s Daimler V8 Dragster.
Elsewhere on the airfield, the Stunt Zone offers two and four-wheeled shows; the Monster Zone has passenger rides; the Military Zone will have military vehicles and tanks firing dummy rounds with re-enacments groups from WWII setting up camp.
And Dunsfold’s familiar 747, VC10 and DC3 jets will all be open for public tours.
In the biggest traffic change to help beat the queues, the exit through Green Gate, past The Compasses pub and out to the Alfold Crossways, will be restricted to one-way in late afternoon and early evening.
Further improvements include:–
• An additional entrance gate and car park facility directly off the A281, which will increase capacity by 50 per cent during peak flows.
• Variable message signs on approach roads providing up-to-date event notifications and travel time information
• Additional car park marshals
• Better junction management including the B2130 Godalming Road and Dunsfold Common Road
• Journey time monitoring allowing organisers to review roads and adapt entry systems to direct traffic more accurately and keep it flowing.
• Additional ticket-selling staff and special ‘cash-only’ queues
•A public bus service four times a day from Guildford rail station in partnership with Compass Travel
The entire site will continue to be monitored by CCTV to ensure a quick response to any traffic and parking issues.
And Wings and Wheels radio will broadcast up to date traffic information during peak times on 87.9FM.
The organisers have also laid on evening entertainment and late-night catering options to encourage visitors to stay behind and avoid joining the peak rush from around 4-6.30pm.
Event director Jamie McAllister said: “Parking and traffic management is a priority for the team and we are always looking at alternative ways of improving flow on and off the aerodrome.
“The new one-way traffic management out onto the Dunsfold Road to the Alfold Crossways is a big step forward in increasing traffic flow off the site and we are confident that this, coupled with all the changes, will contribute to a significant overall improvement to the traffic management plan.
“We would continue to encourage people to arrive early and plan for a full day out as we have entertainment happening from 9am until 8pm.”
This year’s show will be assisting the fundraising efforts of Brooklands Museum Trust and Help for Heroes.
