The passenger, a 29-year-old man from Romania, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 22-year-old man, from Poland, was taken to the Royal Surrey County Hospital, in Guilford, with superficial injuries.

He was later interviewed under caution, police said.

The accident happened on Hollywater Road, near the junction of Lynchborough Road. The 4x4 Grand Cherokke Jeep was travelling east on Hollywater Road heading toward the B3004 when it crashed into a tree around 7.30am.

Fire crews from both Surrey and Hampshire attended alongside South Central Ambulance Service.

Senior Investigating Officer Police Sergeant Gabe Snuggs said:?“We are appealing for witnesses in relation to the incident. We are particularly looking to speak with the driver of a black car we believe was travelling in the opposite direction towards Liphook Road at around the time the collision occurred.”
