A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries on Tuesday following a six-car pile up on the Hog's Back that saw the road closed for more than seven hours. The multi-vehicle collision took place on the Guildford-bound carriageway near the Puttenham slip road some time after 7am when the woman's red Mini collided with another vehicle. The car she collided with had been involved in an accident with a heavy goods vehicle and all three were travelling in the same direction. Officers now believe that six vehicles were involved in the smash including a grey Ford Focus, a blue Ford Mondeo, a black Ford Focus and a white Citroen panel van. The driver of the Mini was trapped inside her car and had to be cut free by the fire brigade. She underwent emergency surgery for serious head injuries. Others involved in the incident were treated for minor injuries. The road closure caused severe tailbacks and congestion throughout the area but police say that they did all they could to clear the scene quickly. Sergeant Steve Whyte from Surrey Police's roads policing unit, dealt with the incident. "We appreciate that the collision caused lengthy delays for many motorists but we worked as quickly as we could to recover the vehicles involved, clear the scene and carry out the necessary investigations," he said. "We would like to thank drivers for their patience." Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward and contact the roads policing unit at Chertsey on 01483 639640. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
