A WOMAN who smashed a glass over another drinker's head at a Haslemere pub was spared going to prison last Friday. Sarah Denyer, 23, attacked Helen Kaliszewska after allegedly being antagonised by her victim, at The Inn on the Green, Wey Hill, throughout the evening of April 6. She denied wounding with intent but pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful wounding after causing two lacerations to Ms Kaliszewska's head, although neither required hospital treatment. Denyer, of Sandy Hill Road, Farnham, received a suspended prison sentence at Guildford Crown Court as a result of her having no previous convictions, but was ordered to pay compensation to Ms Kaliszewska and undertake 150 hours unpaid work in the community. She had drunk three pints of Stella and six double vodkas before attacking her victim at around 11.45pm. Wendy Cottee, prosecuting, told the court: "The victim had been in the pub with friends throughout the evening. The parties were known to each other and there had been some antagonism between the two. "Late in the evening this defendant was seen by a member of the bar staff in the doorway gesturing to her victim. She had a glass in her hand and she was told to desist or calm down. "Instead she ran at the victim and hit her in the back of the head with the hand carrying the glass, which smashed. She also grabbed the victim's hair and some of her extensions were pulled out." Ms Cottee added that Denyer said she carried a glass in her hand as a force of habit, whether it was empty or not, and simply forgot she was holding it when she hit Ms Kaliszewska. David Castle, defending, said Denyer had led a law- abiding life and should receive credit for her previous good character. He said: "There was antagonism between the two, which stretches back some time. Her friend was attacked by the victim earlier in the evening, which led to this. She decided she was going to confront the victim and accepts she went to hit her. "Fortunately the injuries sustained were not serious. She has done everything she can to show her remorse and her risk of re-offending is extremely low." Recorder David Brock told Denyer: "This was a glassing incident in a pub and you could have seriously injured your victim. "Clearly this offence is so serious only a custodial sentence can be justified, and the sentence I pass is one of nine months' imprisonment. However, I am going to suspend it for two years. "I am also ordering you to undertake 150 hours unpaid work, which will be completed within 12 months." Denyer was also ordered to pay £400 compensation to Ms Kaliszewska and prosecution costs of £235.
