EMPLOYEES at the Travelbag offices on the junction of Newman Lane and Mill Lane were evacuated on Wednesday morning due to a suspected gas leak.
A Travelbag spokesman said that the alarm was raised after employees noticed a strange smell, which caused them to alert the Hampshire Fire Service.
Three other industrial premises in the area were also evacuated, and traffic and bus routes were directed away from the scene by Hampshire Police.
Electricity supplies to the buildings were cut off as a precaution, and an emergency response unit from the Transco gas company was called to deal with the situation.
The Hampshire Ambulance Service were on hand to deal with any casualties that arose, but no injuries were recorded.
Prompt action by the emergency services meant that the emergency was short-lived however, and employees returned to the evacuated buildings after all of the buildings were properly ventilated.
