SOUTH East Water is still urging teamwork in a bid to avoid a spike in demand for water during as the World Cup reached its final stages.

With families and friends gathering to watch the football, South East Water, which supplies 2.2 million customers in Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire, is urging everyone to work together to try to use water wisely.

Steve Andrews, head of central operations, said: “As the heat increases, so does the amount of water our customers use. To cope with this, we are producing around an extra 100 million litres a day across our supply area – the equivalent of 40 Olympic swimming pools.

“Some of our customers may experience lower than normal pressure during peak demand in the evening (5pm-7pm) and we are asking all customers to reduce non-essential water use to try to make sure there is enough water for everyone.

“Being water savvy in the sunshine will help ease pressure on our extensive network of 9,000 miles of pipes, pumping stations and treatment works which are working round the clock to keep taps running.

“Despite the recent dry spell, our resources are at the levels we’d expect them to be for this time of year so we don’t have any water use restrictions in place, but we continue to monitor the situation closely and ask customers to do their bit by cutting any non-essential use, such as watering plants or washing cars.

“Saving water means saving money too and customers can find top tips and free water-saving devices on our website southeastwater.co.uk.”
