A SECOND World War smoke bomb was found and safely disposed of at Frensham Common at the weekend, after a visitor to the common was found using a metal detector illegally.

Ranger Steve Webster said: “I was patrolling the grounds, when the guy came over to show me the object.

“I then called the police who called in the Royal Logistic Corp, after agreeing it was suitably dangerous for them to come and have a look at it. They used a portable X-ray machine to examine it and then carried out an controlled explosion.

“I would advise anyone not to touch anything they think looks suspicious. These findings are not very common, but after the heat fire back in 2010 more came to the surface, after the vegetation had been burnt away.”

If anyone sees anything suspicious they should notify the park ranger or the police immediately and leave the object where it was found, untouched.
