Rowledge attempt to reach the quarter-finals of the National Village Cup when they entertain Buckinghamshire side Dinton on Sunday.

Despite the grim relegation battle they are facing on Saturdays in the Southern Premier League Division Two, Rowledge have reeled off a series of impressive wins in the Village Cup.

They clinched the Surrey/Berks Group by beating Holmbury – conquerors of Frensham – and, in the sixth round, disposed of league rivals Sparsholt.

Now Rowledge face the side they beat at the same stage three years ago, having made the trip to Dinton's superb Minor Counties standard ground near Aylesbury.

They eventually lost to Horndean in the quarter-finals that season after one of many successful runs Rowledge have enjoyed in the 31-year-old competition.

Rowledge actually reached Lord's in 1985, under the captaincy of Alan Prior, and came agonisingly close to lifting the trophy, losing to Scottish champions Freuchie on the fewer-wickets-lost rule, the scores having ended level.

Seventeen years on, a survivor from that side is still playing. Chris Yates, given a new lease of cricketing life by a hip replacement operation last winter, remains a vital cog in the attack with his left-arm seam (or is it now spin?).

He lines up alongside son Ricky and nephew Chris Jnr and, good news for Rowledge, the junior Yates are available for the rest of the league campaign.

Dave Booton's side, in fact, remain confident that they can turn things around in the league. They need to win four of their remaining seven games and with the Yates, Nick Morant and promising all-rounder Frazer Harland in the line-up, they have high hopes of doing just that. Rowledge also need Australian Jeff Anning to perform at his high-octane best with bat and ball.

Harland (no relation to John Harland) has been the pick of a crop of promising youth players, including Chris Brinsden and Matt Burchell. The 17-year-old picks the right ball to hit when under pressure, as he showed when he struck two sixes in the last over against Holmbury.

The two Harlands, plus Chris Yates Jnr and Anning (both ineligible), are unavailable for Sunday, but Rowledge have ample replacements and will be disappointed if they fail to reach the last eight.

They could do with another vintage innings from David Lloyd, still technically their best batsman, who made a match-winning and chanceless 95 not out against Sparsholt two weeks ago.

The game starts at 2 pm and Rowledge invite spectators to enjoy the cricket, barbecue and beer tent.

A big weekend for Rowledge starts today (Friday) with the President's Day game. Rowledge take on a President's XI captained by Chris Yates Snr and which includes Jeff Anning, Lance Kahler (Queensland 'A' and Wembley) and Farnham's Gary Clapham.

On Saturday, Rowledge are home to Hampshire Academy, hoping to complete the double over the league's high-flyers.
