ALTON Convent School has hosted an engineering competition.

Eight pupils from year two and year five at the convent school were joined by primary school pupils from Binsted, Bentley, Sheet, St James’ at Elstead, The Butts at Alton, and youngsters from Liphook Infant School.

The schools had all worked in teams to design and develop vehicles. The apprentice-level challenge involved building a vehicle from a shoe box so that their vehicles would travel the furthest in a straight line when released from a ramp.

Mrs Love, a year two teacher at the convent school, said: “The children were fascinated to learn new vocabulary, such as, chassis, axle and body. Though year two’s vehicle did not travel the furthest it was among the finest looking!”

The engineering-level teams were tasked to design and power their automotive. The vehicles were then tested for their ability to travel in a straight line and to climb a ramp of increasing steepness. Both groups were subject to a series of questions from nine experienced engineers.

Team Saints, which included Alex Lelliott, Henry Blackmore and Ben Hughes from Alton Convent School, were victorious in the engineering category, with Liphook Infant School securing the apprentice titles.

The winners will now progress to the regional finals.
