Youngsters at Selborne School look set to pedal their way into the record books - at least as far as the British Aerospace Pedal Car Challenge 1999 is concerned.

Taking part in a competition for primary and secondary schools, colleges, youth groups, service and cadet organisations and businesses, in which the younger category is open to all under 16s, the team, aged from seven years upwards, are likely to find themselves at a disadvantage in the length-of-leg department.

But that doesn't bother Peter Elderton (seven) and his team-mates, who are out to raise as much money as they can through sponsorship for Leukaemia research as well as the school's building fund.

Peter's father Tim is head of design and technology at Court Moor comprehensive school in Fleet, where he has managed teams in the annual competition, formerly staged at RAF Odiham.

The 5K, 100-lap race, due to take place on Saturday, July 10, is the culmination of many weeks of work by young engineers, building cars to a strict specification out of old bicycle parts and so forth.

Young Peter has been taking an interest for some years, and this year decided to construct his own vehicle, with a bit of help from Dad.

He and his team of schoolmates put the construction to the test in the car park at Sainsbury's Alton store on Sunday afternoon ready for what promises to be an exciting day out next month.
