FARNHAM Youth Choir has collected two silver awards at this year's World International Choral Competition held in Xiamen, China. With choirs from Europe to Africa to Asia competing, the contest had a truly exotic, cosmopolitan flavour about it. The choir was not fazed by the enormity of the occasion and received awards in both the youth choir and folk song categories. David Victor-Smith, musical director, said: "This is a wonderful achievement. The members worked so hard in very hot conditions. Their performances on the day were superb." Chris Mansell, chairman of the choir, added: "It makes a lot of hard work by many people over many months really worthwhile. I hope everyone in the town appreciates what David and his team have achieved." The choir, made up of seven boys and 39 girls between the ages of 12 and 18, also managed some sightseeing in Beijing before returning home on Monday. The group has a history of grooming musical talent, as some former choristers have gained scholarships and others gone onto perform professionally. This is not the first time the choir has entered an international competition, but it was the biggest event in its history. The choir was set- up in 1984 and was twice in the '90s named National Choir of the Year. For more information about the choir, phone Chris Mansell on 01252 715115.
