As details are finalised for auditions day on Sunday, June 24, Farnham Youth Choir has announced an ambitious three-year strategic plan, one which aims to take “exciting risks” in reaching new audiences in the modern digital age.

At the recent launch presentation to choir members and parents, FYC vice-chairman Andy Blair emphasised “the importance of innovation in choral performance, broadening the experience of our young singers across all choirs by working with composers and exciting collaborations with artists from other disciplines”.

He added: “We also plan to develop a more global audience for FYC, through creative use of social media and other digital channels.”

FYC is looking to recruit new members for its training choir (academic years two to four), junior choir (years five to seven) as well as the internationally-renowned Farnham Youth Choir (11 to 18 year olds).

“In the younger choirs in particular we are looking for raw ability rather than trained voices,” says FYC’s musical director Jo Tomlinson. “As long as they can sing in tune and have a love of music, we will do the rest!

“Led by some of the UK’s top vocal and choral trainers who have worked with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, our young singers get an amazing musical education through a structured programme combining vocal technique and musicianship.

“All this is achieved in a sociable, fun atmosphere and, as past members over FYC’s 30-plus year history will agree, it all adds up to a life-changing experience!” New initiatives include hosting a Junior Choirs Festival in spring 2019 and a new commission combining all three choirs for the first time by rising star composer Owain Park.

Future plans for FYC also include participation in the 2019 European Choir Games in Gothenburg and the 2020 World Choir Games in which one of the leading bidders is South Korea.
