CONSULTATION is under way to find suitable locations for a number of youth shelters in Petersfield. Town councillors are looking to install three shelters on council-owned land in a bid to drive down anti-social behaviour. The Heath, Love Lane, The Avenue playing fields and Borough Road recreation ground are all under the microscope as possible homes for the controversial meeting points. But members of Petersfield Town Council's anti- social behaviour working party are mindful that people living near the proposed sites will want to make their voices heard. At a meeting of the working party on Wednesday, Petersfield Police sergeant Paul Bromell said: "I don't want to say this is the answer to all of our problems – it is a decision that people in Petersfield have to make. "The police view is that it is not for us to force it upon the people of Petersfield, but if they want it then we help find out where it can go. "Young people are not evil, hardcore criminals, but I do understand that some people find it uncomfortable walking through a group of them when they are swearing." It is hoped the meeting points will provide a safe and visible environment in which young people can gather. Up to £20,000 has already been set aside from the town council's capital funds to pay for them. And more funds can be accessed by applications to outside bodies. Members also considered approaching East Hampshire District Council to question whether it would consider The Square as a possible location. The same was suggested for the Penns Field play area at the Taro Leisure Centre. Working party chairman Hilary Ayer has now recommended three shelters be considered and that consultation in to the proposed locations continue. The matter will be discussed again at December's full town council meeting. Anyone who wants to discuss the shelters with Sgt Bromell can contact him on 0845 0454545.
