ALTON Swimming Club’s Lizzie Allen broke a world record when she competed at the European Down Syndrome Open Swimming Championships in Kosovo.

The 14-year-old was up against talented swimmers from Russia, Estonia, Sweden, Spain and Ireland, but smashed the 25m freestyle junior Down Syndrome world record with a time of 19.36secs.

Lizzie also won gold medals in the 25m backstroke, butterfly and 100m freestyle and achieved four personal bests during the competition.

She trains three times a week with Alton SC and is now preparing for the World Down Syndrome Championships in Nova Scotia, Canada when she will swim for GB.

Lizzie said: “I’m the fastest junior swimmer with Down Syndrome in the whole wide world. I can’t wait to go to Canada.”

Alton coach Shaun Dominy added: “We are all so proud of Lizzie and her incredible achievements.”
